There are 2 types of coral, the marine one and the stone that is formed from pressure induce unto red clay.

Not wanting to start a debate..but what the hell...I agree with Dr. Constance. Coral, as used in jewellery, IS from a marine animal (polyp). MAYBE there is a "coral-coloured" pressurised clay, but it is not coral, as we know it.

Technically, geologically, coral cannot be a gemstone. It does not meet the criteria of a mineral, including it does not have a "rigid", crystalline structure. But also that means opal is technically not a gemstone.
