Something dark, it feels cold, angry, uninviting. I feel a tightening in my chest, as though panic is about to overwhelm my sense of peace.
I react instinctively, but with a sureness that comes from a place of which I seldom have awareness as I raise my right hand, palm forward, and sweep it to the side.
The something dissipates as if my hand is a flashlight in a dark room. Every one of the dozen or so people in the room stop, and all turn to look at me. I feel momentarily self-conscious, and then the joy returns and I say “Good Morning” with a lightheartedness that surprises me. And most everyone smiles and resumes what they were doing.
What had just happened? What did I do, and how? My mind searches back into my memory in futility. I am certainly awake now.
A dark haired woman stops stocking shelves and stands up in my path. She seems upset, almost angry. I turn slightly to pass, and she moves to again block my way. So I step around the stanchion near to the side of us and proceed to the coffee bar.
My mug is dirty, and I would like to rinse it out. There is a light haired woman working at the sink, and I ask “May I use the sink to rinse this out?”
“Five bucks. Five bucks.” The answer is quick, quipped out as though practiced.
“Oh, you all have the quick crew on this morning! That was good.” And as she turns to place an urn on the counter, I step over and start to wash out the filth from the mug.
“I'm also horny.”
My mind freezes. Was that a continuation of the banter, or had I been propositioned? Or solicited? Any one of the choices could be right.
And then I realize; it doesn't really make any difference. I have absolutely no interest. And this surprises me almost as most as the entire episode up to this point.
So I smile slightly and shake my head, and proceed to fill the cup from the urn. As I turn and walk toward the counter where the cashier is helping another customer, the light haired woman busies herself at a rack of pastries.
The cashier finishes with the customer, and I walk up and set down my mug. “Just the coffee, thanks.”
She smiles broadly, and waves me away. “Well OK, and thank you” is all my confusion will allow out.
“No, thank you!” She is almost giggling.
I walk out without further incident, and as I walk back to the truck, my mind is struggling to get a handle on what had occurred in the building. I would just write it all off as a series of errors in my perception, except for the reactions of the other people.
And now I have questions forming in my mind.
