Agree with all that has been said... and more with the fact that we are all students and teachers... we can learn from anything and anyone that crosses our path... I also agree that the best teacher is our own inner self and higher being... we already have all the knowledge there is we have just forgotten and people around as mirror it back to us and help us to remember as we do for them... we are all in these together... Finally I think a real teacher is not one that preaches his own truth / knowledge, but one that inspires and motivates the person to find their own truth... giving him/her just enough to set them on the right course... they can only share their knowledge and if knowledge is not experienced does not become the truth but remains mere knowledge...
Jim, am now looking at my thumb to see the universe lol Infinite cycles within ONE larger one...amazing (The idea of the ONE and the MANY and how the MANY are included in the ONE and how each everyone of them is ONE on itself...)

@Josh and Dormant. Thank you. This is the same thought that I had as I posted this poll. As others have said, I feel we are all teachers and students to varying degrees at times and the person we sit next to on the bus may be our best teacher. Gaining knowledge of spiritual theory does not necessarily create a spiritual person nor does teaching to others, one's own 'take' on spirituality, make a spiritual teacher. To guide and encourage another to their own discovery is I feel, a worthy cause.
My thought is why aren't we our own teacher, can we not grasp the concept of what a teacher is? or is it that we feel that some one else knows us better than we do? or is it that we are not yet in a place of confidence and trust that we CAN be our own teachers. It is but a shift of mindset and trust...
My thought is why aren't we our own teacher, can we not grasp the concept of what a teacher is? or is it that we feel that some one else knows us better than we do? or is it that we are not yet in a place of confidence and trust that we CAN be our own teachers. It is but a shift of mindset and trust, in doing so we learn to teach ourselves, by looking at either something or a situation and progressing down our intial thoughts and feelings on it until an understanding or view just fits or sits with us, or that your knowing has reached the moment of peace and contentment with it.....
My best spiritual teachers have been mirrors and projectors for me to see and know in my bones the effects of my thoughts and actions and to hold those up to the Light for clarity

I believe my entire life is a spiritual lesson and I am surrounded constantly by spiritual teachers who shine their light along my path so I can keep on moving as Gordon suggested.
What I love about SN is that most comments come from personal experiences and that allows me to find answers from kindred souls that help further me along my own path.
My previous comment about 'spiritual masturbation' was in reference to some souls I have encountered in my life outside of SN, like the guy in the coffee shop who talked my ear off the other day about how thoughts create reality and in the same breath ended his rant with "I can't stand my job, I need a new career, life's tough"...lol. All the while he's talking, I am staring at this homeless soul sitting across the street who is using his power of thought and imagination to manifest cigarettes when he wants, or some change when he needs it, a coffee for a treat and some food for his stomach.
From my perspective, the homeless man was a better teacher and a master of thoughts than the babbling suit wearing book reader...

You are all my Spiritual Leaders, and I need you all, to learn how to follow my own path! So thank you all for my life! And, thank you, Jenn, for this poll!

A good spiritual teacher will guide a student in thier awakening to the spirit within and the spiritual path to nurturing the essence. To say that spirituality is to follow ones own path is a dubious statement. That path could be anything. Is the path of the serial killer spiritual? Perhaps a dark spiritual path? Such a path might be taken without the knowledge that their was another path, and thus the reason for a good teacher. Those who are awakened may still need a teacher depending on the strength of their practice. The physical world and its perceptions and emotions are very challenging and also tiring. A good teacher would assist the student in finding focus and maintaining dicipline along the enlightened path.
To me, spirituality means a lot more than following my own path but in that context I would say that a teacher teaches how to find the path and how to stay on the path (development). To me, spirituality means a lot more than following my own path but in that context I would say that a teacher teaches how to find the path and how to stay on the path (development). I recently attended a spirituality group with 5 other people. It was a "show and tell" theme and I was really surprised that I was the only one in the group that mentioned any kind of spiritual practice/discipline. There was plenty of talk of ouija, angels, pagan rituals, numerology, etc. but I was the only one to mention yoga, meditation, mindfulness, etc. It really made me wonder because they really seemed like average people and not very spiritual at all. I guess this gets back to what Josh said about self mastery being an essential ingredient to a spiritual life. Although I'm just guessing. All of those people are probably more mature than me in certain ways and I probably need to focus on my own development rather than worry about what others are doing.
Infinite cycles within ONE larger one...amazing
The book readers who posses no personal experiences yet always have the most to say are ones too.
Sorry if I have offended anyone but if I did than you are one...
