Freedom, what does it mean to you? When I think of freedom I think of many things, “Freedom of Choice”, “Freedom to come and go”, “Freedom to Express Yourself” but it seems that there are people and governments around the world who think nothing of taking them away from us. There are those who think that they have the right to control our lives in every area.
Today I read a story of a group of Afghans who raided a party and beheaded 17 people because they were dancing, there are performers in Russia who were sentenced to prison because they sang a song about their government and right now Congress is trying to pass a bill that would make it against the law to legally protest in public. You could be sentenced up to 10 years for being a part of a legal protest.
As our freedoms are slowly taken away from us I think it is time to see that this is a global problem. Government and Political Parties are taking away our Freedoms under the guise of protecting us from the unseen evils out there. But who is the real evil in this picture, the ones who are limiting our voting rights, changing the laws to favor one group over another, shouldn’t we all have equal freedoms and rights under the law?
We now have corporations who have more rights and freedoms than the individual, so maybe it’s time for the citizens of this world to form their own corporation. We could incorporate as the “Corporation of Free Thinking Individuals” with equal rights. Then we could have the Freedom of not paying our taxes, changing the laws to represent the people and not the politicians and gain our Freedoms back.
As we sit in our comfy recliner each night and watch our select version of the bias newscast we are slowly becoming a nation, a world of brain washed people. I find it hard to believe that the same people who protested in the 60’s against war, oppression, women’s rights are now the same people who are trying to take these freedoms away from us now. There is a saying, “Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely” was stated by Lord Acton in 1887 and unfortunately still holds true today.
Freedom should be something we embrace, something we should guard and fight for against all forms of power. As elections come and go, governments change the one thing that should remain are our Freedoms. If there was ever a time in our country or in the world for individuals to join together as one voice and say “NO” to these infringements on our Freedom, now is the time.
No one party should have the power to change our laws, force their beliefs on others or deny any individual or group their Freedoms. I may not always agree with what you say or how you say it but at least I want the Freedom to debate you without reprisal.
Maybe that is the reason for this discussion because there are those who do not what a discussion they want “Absolute Power”.
I think it is time to ring the “Bell of Freedom” and wake that sleeping giant around the world and demand that these Freedoms apply to all and not just the “Selected Few”.
With that I would like to end with this quote…
“When we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of that old Negro spiritual, Free at last! Free at last! Thank God Almighty, we are free at last!”
King Jr. Martin Luther
Until next time….
